Encourage0gram January 3, 2019
As I embark on the new year of 2019, I was reminded that this song spoke to my heart so clearly many years ago. The tune was written by George Beverly Shea as he was deliberating what career to choose - either to sing gospel songs or others. His mother placed this poem written by Mrs. Rhea Miller, on the piano. George was 23 and decided to sing gospel songs. That one choice transformed his life. He lived to the ripe old age of 104!
George once said, "Over the years, I've not sung any song more than 'I'd Rather Have Jesus', but I never tire of Mrs. Miller's heartfelt words,"
Let these words call you close to Jesus this year! There is no greater Master to serve than our Lord Jesus Christ! When we trust in Him - we have Him and He has us!
May God richly bless you this new year and always as you "let Him lead!"
1 I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I'd rather be His than have riches untold;
I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands.
I'd rather be led by His nail pierced hand
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin's dread sway.
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
2 I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause;
I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame.
I'd rather be true to His holy name [Chorus]
3 He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
He's sweeter than honey from out the comb;
He's all that my hungering spirit needs.
I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead [Chorus]
With joy and prayers for you,
