The week I began to read the gospel of Mark. Mark was an eyewitness to the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. Most believe he was present in the garden when Jesus was arrested. See Mark 14:51-52. Tradition also says that the Upper Room was in John Mark’s home. Mark was a relative of the missionary Barnabas. See Colossians 4:10.
Mark is a letter which highlights the servant ministry of Jesus Christ. A key verse is found in 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,
but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Jesus is very active and engaged with people. Mark records 19 miracles of Jesus to demonstrate his supernatural power. Most believe Mark had a close friendship with Peter who gave him eyewitness information as he wrote the letter. see 1 Peter 5:13.
I was struck by the very first words in this letter:
NIV Mark 1:1
The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.
This letter is about the good news of Jesus! The gospel is just beginning in that first century. The end of the gospel story still has not come today! We are called to preach this gospel to the whole world. Now is the season of salvation for all people through the gospel message.
NIV Mark 16:15
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
We are called to teach and live out the gospel. The good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has come and lived among us. He died on the cross and was buried. Yet the grave could not hold Him for on the third day He arose. By believing on Him, we are freely given forgiveness of our sins and eternal life. see John 3:16-18
Even during the Tribulation period, the gospel will be proclaimed!
NIV Revelation 14:6
Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth -- to every nation, tribe, language and people.
The gospel is celebrated in heaven today.
NIV Revelation 5:9-10
And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign1 on the earth."
NIV Revelation 5:12
In a loud voice they were saying: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"
The end of gospel preaching will come when all things are made new! And even in eternity we will forever remember, sing, and proclaim the gospel to the glory of our Savior Jesus Christ!
NIV Revelation 21:5-7
He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." 6 He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.
Give praise to God who sent His one and only Son! Thank Him today for giving us this mighty message of love and hope. Remember that the gospel is transforming lives across the world TODAY! Pray for opportunities to share the good news in your words and in your lives! We are Christ’s ambassadors and He is communicating the gospel through us! The Gospel is the mighty conqueror traveling all over the world!
NIV Colossians 1:6
In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world -- just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God's grace.
Your servant for Jesus’ sake,
