Dear Friends,

Since Monday, May 25, is Memorial Day, I thought we may profit from a short study on freedom.

Jesus sets us free from the penalty of our SINS!

NIV John 8:34-36
Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

In verse 34 Jesus makes a solemn statement about sin.  All who sin are enslaved to sin.  Since all of us were born with a sin nature, we sin (Romans 3:23, 6:23).  It comes to us by our fallen nature.  It is revealed in our sinful thoughts, words, motives and actions. Therefore, we are sin’s slaves.  Sin is our master!  We do not teach our children to sin – they do it naturally.

Since we are sinners by nature and by choice, we need redemption.  The price for our sin debt before the holy God must be paid! We cannot pay off the debt.  Jesus paid our debt by redeeming us!  This redemption is fully paid by Jesus in his death for us!  His blood gives us full forgiveness of our sins.  It is free to all who believe on Jesus.  We are commanded to believe on Him. Please note Paul states our redemption in the past tense!  It is done for all who are in Him by faith. This freedom is by grace therefore it is free!

NIV Ephesians 1:7
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
in accordance with the riches of God's grace

Once we have been set free from the just penalty of our sins, we are no longer slaves to sin but now children in God’s forever family! And Jesus says this freedom is real and it is eternal.  You are free indeed!

What a blessing to behold!  We are set free and remain free in God’s forever redeemed family!  This freedom from sin’s penalty is free to us because Jesus paid the debt in full!  So, the gospel invitation goes out to the whole world enslaved in sin!  Come to Jesus, believe on Him.  Believe that by his death on the cross your debt is fully paid and you are free!  Then give thanks to the Lord who has set your free indeed!

Let me close with the glorious lyrics of “Redeemed” written by Big Daddy Weave:

Seems like all I can see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last
Then You look at this prisoner and say to me "son
Stop fighting a fight that's already been won"

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off theses heavy chains
And wipe away every stain now I'm not who I used to be
I am redeemed

I'm redeemed
All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear You whisper, "Child lift up your head"
I remember oh God, You're not done with me yet
I am redeemed, You set me free

So I'll shake off theses heavy chains
And wipe away every stain now I'm not who I used to be
Because I don't have to be the old man inside of me
'Cause his day is long dead and gone
Because I've got a new name, a new life I'm not the same
And a hope that will carry me home

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off theses heavy chains
And wipe away every stain now I'm not who I used to be
I am redeemed, You set me free
So I'll shake off theses heavy chains
And wipe away every stain now I'm not who I used to be

Oh God I'm not who I used to be
Jesus I'm not who I used to be
'Cause I am redeemed
Thank God, redeemed
