We began a journey in the Apostle John’s letter called The Revelation of Jesus Christ a few days ago. It is my conviction that the words recorded by John are inerrant and have been preserved for us by the Holy Spirit. We can rely on the truth revealed here. We have concentrated on the words Jesus uses to describe Himself in messages to seven first century churches in Asia Minor.
We have reached the church at Thyatira. This city is the smallest in our list of seven yet they are given the longest letter. It was a country church forty miles southeast of Pergamum. Apollos the “sun god” of the Romans was called the guardian of the city. There were very prosperous trade guilds in the city which included: wool workers, linen workers, dyers, leather tanners, potters, bakers, slave dealers and bronze smiths. These historic facts set the stage for Jesus’ introduction:
NIVO Revelation 2:18
"To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:
These are the words of the Son of God,
whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.
When Jesus says He is the Son of God, He is identifying Himself as equal with God. Every perfection in the Father is also present in the Son and the Holy Spirit. They are 3 co-equals. Apollos was called the son of Zeus. But Jesus truly is God’s unique son. David predicted this in Psalm 2
NIVO Psalm 2:7-11
I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
The writer of Hebrews echoes the same truth:
NIVO Hebrews 1:1-3
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
His eyes like fire to show his ability to see clearly all things and all people. He has infinite ability to discern truth and to judge right from wrong. His feet of burnished bronze are a symbol of his power, stability and strength.
These are stunning words of comfort to all who trust in Jesus. We rest in His justice! He will make all things right at the judgment. No one gets away with deceit. He will demand truth in His judgment. When we are weak, we can always look to our omnipotent Savior! Jesus promises to the faithful overcomers a place reigning with Him. All who trust in the Son of God share this destiny! Our ultimate future is secure in heaven therefore we will keep trusting in our Almighty Savior on the earth.
Keep walking by faith!
