Dear Friends,

We continue our journey in the Revelation of Jesus Christ looking for the declarations Jesus gives to reveal to us who He truly is!  He is the Way, the Truth and the Life therefore all His words are true. They will be true for all time!  He does not change because Perfection cannot improve.

Here are Jesus’ words of introduction to the church at Smyrna:

NIVO Revelation 2:8

"To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.

The church at Smyrna was under persecution for their faith.  They were materially poor but rich in faith.  They had been tested and that testing would continue.  Some would give their lives for their faith.  Therefore, it is most appropriate that Jesus reminds them of His blessed resurrection.

When we endure persecution, it is a blessing to rely on the Savior who transcends time!  Jesus repeats his introduction of 1:17 that He is the First and the Last.  He is eternal!  This was declared by the prophet Isaiah:

NIVO Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

NIVO Isaiah 44:6

"This is what the LORD says-- Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.”

Jesus repeats these words in 21:13

NIVO Revelation 22:13

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Oh!  How very blessed we are to know our Lord Jesus Christ who reigns over time and circumstances!

Jesus continues with a reminder of His death and resurrection! He confesses the historic fact: “who died.” The Scriptures always state clearly that Jesus died on the cross. He died as our Substitute to bear the penalty our sins deserve.  He fully paid our debt then rose again to prove His victory over sin and death!  Next Jesus affirms the historic fact of His resurrection: “and came to life again.” No one in history has ever risen from the dead in a glorified human body except Jesus alone!  This is the uniqueness of our Lord and our gospel.

The longer I live the more I see the value in daily reflecting on the good news.  All who trust in Jesus will live forever with Him. We will not be hurt at all by the second death (2:11, 20:14).  Meditate on the gospel today and rejoice!

With my love and prayers,

Pastor Rick
