Today I was singing the song by Matt Mayer “All the People said Amen.’ It was my earworm for the day! I did a little search and found that King and Country wrote a song recently entitled, “Amen.” So, I asked myself: what does it mean when we say, “AMEN.”
The Webster’s dictionary does a fine job of defining Amen:
—used to express solemn ratification (as of an expression of faith) or hearty approval (as of an assertion)
“Amen” appears 57 times in the New International Version of the Bible. It is found 27 times in the Old Testament and 30 times in the New Testament.
The Hebrew word translated amen is directly related to faith and faithfulness. It communicates a certainty in what is stated with a firm foundation on which it stands. So, if we say “amen” we are expressing our agreement in what was communicated. By faith, we believe wholeheartedly that it is true. When the amen is repeated it gives even greater confirmation.
NIV Psalm 72:19
Praise be to his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.
The Greek word Amen actually is found 128 times in the Greek New Testament. It’s meaning is the same. It affirms with absolute confidence what was written or said.
Jesus used the term to introduce some of his most important statements:
NIV Matthew 5:18 For truly I tell you (amen amen), until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
In the gospel of John, the term Amen is always repeated for emphasis! This is double assurance of the truth. Whatever follows this introduction is of greatest importance. Jesus introduces many of the “I AM” promises in the letter with this double Amen. It is often translated “Verily, Verily” or “Truly I say to you.”
Here are few examples:
NIV John 3:3
Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.1 "
NIV John 8:58
"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"
NIV John 16:23
In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
This review inspired me to affirm truth more often with an “Amen!” But I must remember that I will affirm only those truths that are true. I better listen closely before I shout out!
NIV 2 Corinthians 1:20
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.
NIV Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
NIV Revelation 22:20
He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
This morning I am saying AMEN to the sermon you heard yesterday at FCC. Brother Bill Stewart preached the Word! It is a precious message that we can expect persecution but always with the abiding Presence and Power of our Lord! We are enjoying our time with our sons in Virginia. This week we welcome Pastor Jeff Howard our new youth pastor! To this brother and his family we say welcome with a hearty AMEN!
