August 3, 2020
We have been reading one chapter of Proverbs each day in August. The practical call to seek wisdom is prominent in these chapters. Solomon is calling us to pursue wisdom. I define wisdom as skillful living that honors God.
We should “receive” the words of wisdom and hide them like treasure in our lives (2:1). We should call out and cry aloud for it (2:2). We must search for wisdom like a hidden treasure of silver (2:3). By these urgent means we will understand true worship and receive wisdom as a gift from God (2:5-6). Consequently, we will experience success and the protection of God (2:7-8). Wisdom has the power to give us discernment so we will avoid evil men and women (2:12-22).
We all seek “pleasantness” (2:10) which comes when wisdom becomes a central part of our character. This word is used as a title for God Himself. It combines delight with charm and beauty. In 2:11 Solomon promises that discretion will protect and guard us! Discretion is the ability to devise a godly plan and fulfill it!
In chapter 3 Solomon gives us more reasons to seek and apply wisdom in our lives! He adds that discipline will be necessary in the maturing process (2:11-12). This is quoted in Hebrews 12:5-6. God’s just discipline and rebuke is an expression of His great love for his children. So we must be careful not to despise or ignore it.
I am enjoying this journey down the path of wisdom. I hope you are as well. Tomorrow we look at Proverbs 4. Read the chapter with an eager heart to know it and apply it in your life!
My prayers are with you always!
