Greetings to you in the Great Name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

Meditating on our Lord’s love today, I was reminded of my need for constant reminders. I seem to forget that God loves me. Sometimes I catch myself acting like He does not care. I find myself perplexed about my feelings for the Lord and fear that His feelings toward me have changed. However, the Scriptures always point me back to the unconditional, eternal love that God has for each of us!

For the next few moments, let’s consider Psalm 136. In the 26 verses in this song, we find the same words repeated in every verse: “His love endures forever.” The word translated “love” is the special love that God has for all who enter into covenant with Him. We enter solely by faith in Him. Consequently, He promises to love us eternally. Therefore, we know and rely on God’s great love for us. This is a forever fact: He loves you and me!

The psalmist lists some practical reasons why we can know that God loves us:

1. We know He loves us because He is Good and He is God! (1-3)
 2. We know He loves us because He has done many miracles throughout history.
  • Creation is a miracle—God spoke and the universe was created. (4-9)
  • The Exodus from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land (10-16)
  • Victories over the Kings who occupied the Promised Land (17-22)
  • Deliverance from enemies (23-24)
  • Food to eat, our daily Bread (25)
3. For these reasons and many more, we give thanks to the God of heaven! (26)

I want to encourage us to take a brief five minute “praise break” to give thanks to the Lord who loves you! Perhaps you can thank the Lord for the truth that He made you special in your mother’s womb. Perhaps you are thanking God for a recent victory or miracle in your life. All of us can be thankful for life and food to eat.

Psalm 92:1 says, “It is good to praise the Lord.” This is so true! Not only is it theologically correct to give thanks and praise to the Lord, it is also beneficial to us! When we thank the Lord, we enjoy His blessing all over again!

Let me give you an example. On my recent visit to Virginia, I nearly feel asleep at the wheel of the car I rented. I had taken a red-eye flight from Denver, CO to Raleigh, NC. The plane landed in Raleigh at 5:30 a.m. local time. My body on Mountain Standard Time believed it was only 3:30 a.m. I had slept one hour during the three-hour flight on the plane. I rented a car and began a two and one-half hour drive north to Lynchburg, VA. Around 9:15 a.m. local time, I was blessed by the Lord’s faithfulness to keep me from drifting off the round into the median. I was less than a mile from my destination. When I drove into my son’s driveway . . . I got out and praised the Lord at the top of my lungs! I beat my chest in praise! I yelled and shouted! My son, Ben, who was traveling with me just smiled! I realized I had to receive this “awakening” blessings just as I received the gift of salvation many years ago. It was all because of God’s love for me. I did not deserve it. I had not earned it. It was simply a gift to receive. I give thanks to God even today for it. Just writing these words of testimony were good for me. I revisited the joy I felt on that morning! It is good for us to praise the Lord and to give thanks to Him.

So enjoy your praise break today! Give thanks to the Lord who loves you forever!

Your servant for Jesus’ sake,
Pastor Rick
