WHY IS THERE A SERMON?

“Why do we have to listen to someone talk for so long? Why can’t we sing more?” The straight-forward answer is, “because we need to hear God’s Word preached.” You see, preaching is God’s ordained means of transformation (Romans 10:13-17). The preacher opens God’s Word and unfolds it for the people of God after his mind has been shaped by Scripture through his study. As we go verse by verse or chapter by chapter, hitting each book of the Bible in turn, the preacher lets God tell us what He wants us to hear week after week. In preaching, we see modeled how to understand, interpret, and apply Scripture. In preaching, we are reminded of the beautiful gospel that has saved us, and in preaching, we are exhorted to follow the Jesus we love; not merely given facts that are nice to know. Through the Word preached, God speaks to His people. Listening to the sermon - hearing the word - is an act of worship. As the song says, “Speak, O Lord, as we come to you, to receive the food of your holy word.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MISSIONS MOMENT | Frank & Connie Porter

Please join us in the important work of praying for our FCC missionaries. These next two weeks we want to focus on Frank and Connie Porter with Child Evangelism Fellowship in the Western Slopes of Colorado:

  • Pray for the Good News Clubs in Pagosa Springs and Cortez that they would continue to grow and reach children with the gospel.
  • Pray for health and safety of both Frank and Connie, both have recently experienced falls.
  • Pray for continued healing of Connie‘s hand and wrist, an injury she sustained from a bad fall.
  • Pray for additional support for the Southwest chapter so new staff can be hired and good candidates will be found for those open positions.
  • Pray for health of their first great grandson, who is due in May.

Thank you for remembering our missionaries and one another in prayer this week.

Youth Mission Trip Meeting | Sun., Jan. 19, 12p | Rm. 21

We will have an information meeting for parents and students on Sunday, January 19th right after the 2nd service. This short meeting will be to talk through logistics for our Montana Mission Trip this summer.

ABF Series | Sundays, 9a | Rm. 2/3
Everything Bible ABF | Sundays, 10:30a | Rm. 21

Take a deep dive into systematic theology (from a dispensationalist perspective) this Spring with Stephen Forcey. We’ll build on major Biblical themes like Christ, salvation, angels, the Holy Spirit, and more. Great for new believers, new members, and any believer.
