Holy Ambition

Dear fellow intercessors,

Today we continue our study of Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1:9-14.

Last time we saw Paul praying for people he had never met personally. He is determined to keep praying for them that they will grow in their knowledge of God. Now, in Colossians 1:10, he shares his precise goal for them! His purpose is for them to experience the abundant life Jesus promised to all who believe on Him in John 10:10.

Colossians 1:10a NIV
So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way

Paul uses the language of a scale. This is the picture that comes in the phrase: “live a life worthy of the Lord.” Paul expects to see a correlation of their confession of Christ and the way they live. He uses similar language in other letters as he expects to see the transforming power of God in their lives!

Ephesians 4:1 NIV
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

Philippians 1:27 NIV
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel

1 Thessalonians 2:12 NIV
encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

We can pray this prayer for everyone!

Paul adds a parallel phrase “to please God.” Simply stated, we are given the privilege on earth to live a life that does please our Heavenly Father. Our desire should be to see His smile on us. Live with this holy ambition! It is a comprehensive goal to please God in every way!

Have you thought about why you pray for others? Perhaps Paul’s example will cause us to make grander requests for others!

Be Encouraged,

Pastor Rick
