Pronouncing Blessings

Dear Friends,

I want to explore Philippians 1:7-8 with you today.

Philippians 1:7-8 NIV
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

Paul expresses his deep love for Jesus and for this church. He is not ashamed or embarrassed to do so!

1.      His love for them is inclusive – All the pronouns are plural. He loves each one; no one is outside of his love.

2.      His love is intimate – He says he loves them from his heart! These fellow-believers are precious to Paul.

3.      His love is invincible – He loves them with the affection of Jesus. Imagine this comparison! He loves them just like Jesus loves him. Jesus’ love inspires Paul to love them.

4.      His love is intense – He makes an oath to God to love them. His language is explicit. His yearning is like an infant to milk! (See 1 Peter 2:2)

How might we apply these verses? First of all, we need to be transparent and express love to one another. This is our calling and blessing. Pronouncing blessings on others is a great joy!  Secondly, let Jesus inspire us to love others. When it is difficult or strained remember His love for you and ask Him to empower you to love others. As you meditate on these verses, I am certain the Holy Spirit will inspire you to love others as Paul is loving the citizens of Phillipi.

Be encouraged,

Pastor Rick
