Stand Firm and Hold Fast

Dear Friends,

Today we meditate on just one verse in 2 Thessalonians 2:15.

2 Thessalonians 2:15 NIV
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

Paul uses twin metaphors to challenge us! We are to stand firm like a soldier on duty and to hold fast like a student in study. Both remind us we have no reason be lazy in this life while we await the return of our Lord Jesus.

“Stand firm” is a verb found ten times in the New Testament. It is often used for a military setting. Each soldier must keep their post with firm footing and stay in formation as the troops advance on an enemy. This command is continuous since we are always on duty serving our Commander!

1 Corinthians 16:13 NIV
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

The second metaphor is a student who will hold on to sound teaching! The command to hold fast is continuous as well. We are never permitted to forsake the truth of the gospel! We are not called to hold on to the traditions of humans but only the very word of God!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Delight today in these commands and pray for your fellow soldiers and students!

Be encouraged,

Pastor Rick
