This Holy Spirit Miracle

Our current sermon series (“Another Advocate”) is centered around Jesus’ teaching in John 13-16. Over the coming weeks, we will examine the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus on earth as a complimentary study. God, the Father, Son, and Spirit are all equally and fully divine. Yet we see in Jesus’ life on earth that He submitted to the guidance of both the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’ conception itself was a miracle work of the Holy Spirit! Both Mary and Joseph are told this by an angel from heaven.

To the virgin Mary:

Luke 1:35 (NIV) The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

To Joseph, who was engaged to Mary:

Matthew 1:20-21 (NIV) But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

This truth ensures that Jesus is truly the Son of God and Son of Man. His incarnation came by this Holy Spirit miracle of conception. We can correctly say, “Jesus was begotten by the Holy Spirit.” See Hebrews 2:10-18.

Both the components of His deity and the components of His humanity were combined perfectly. He lived a sinless life on earth (See Hebrews 4:15) without the presence of a sinful nature in Him. Yet He was fully human! What a miracle God did in the Holy Spirit’s work in the womb of the virgin Mary, His mother.

Let’s praise God today for the miraculous incarnation of our Savior Jesus Christ!

Your servant,

Pastor Rick
