Dear Friends,
Today we conclude our devotional look into Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1:9-14. Paul summarizes our salvation with three word-pictures in Colossians 1:13-14:
Colossians 1:13-14 NIV
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
First, God rescues us from our sins and its consequences! The verb here is very precise. It celebrates a rescue from a very strong enemy. It is the same verb found in Matthew 6:13, “…deliver us from evil.” We cannot rescue ourselves. We cannot rescue others. But Jesus rescues all sinners who trust in Him! It takes His miraculous power to snatch us out of the darkness of sin and shame.
Second, God removes us from the domain of Satan and brings us into the Kingdom of His Son. Celebrate this completed work! The transfer is complete when we trust in Jesus.
Third, God redeems us! Redemption is a term from the marketplace. He bought us out of our sins. His ransom is full and complete! So, we now live with the certainty of all our sins being forgiven.
All of these pictures should make us celebrate! Today, let’s thank God for the salvation we have in Jesus and consider how you can respond to this redemption!
Be encouraged,
Pastor Rick
