LOVE: A Brand New Command

EncourageOGram

The fruit of the Spirit begins with “love.” This precise word appears in the New Testament as a noun 116 times and as a verb 143 times. It is unique in its meaning focusing on the choice of the will to serve others, often by sacrifice. The word is so common it could almost be called a “Christian” word.

Through October, we will go over several statements about love. These will be specially selected verses, not a complete list.

Just hours before Jesus died on the cross, which was the ultimate demonstration of His love for us, He issued this command.

John 13:34-35 NIV
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

This command to love one another appears 13 times in the New Testament. The newness of the command is remarkable; it was not previously known. It was brand new.  What makes it new is the standard of Jesus’ love for us. This high standard is reachable as the Holy Spirit empowers us to love others!

A parallel thought is found in 1 John 3:16:

1 John 3:16 NIV
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

As we reveal the truth about Jesus, let us focus on loving others!  We should love our brothers and sisters in Christ but also those who do not yet believe on Him. This love is extended to everyone including even our enemies!

Matthew 5:43-44 NIV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Think of practical ways you can love someone this week. Pray for them as you also love them. Ask God to show you who He is calling you to love this week.

Be encouraged,

Pastor Rick
