Today, we take a very brief review of the blessed person as revealed in the book of Psalms. We begin by noting that the book of Psalms was the worship book for worship. These songs are written to be used in corporate worship!
Yesterday we introduced the term “blessed,” which means “to be happy many times because of the favor of God.” It is found 26 times in the Psalms. Most times it introduces a song as it does in Psalm 1.
Psalm 2:12 NIV
Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Here we see that there is a blessing on all who seek refuge or protection in the Son of God! This is contrasted in the Psalm with all who rebel against Him.
Psalm 32:1-2 NIV
Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.
In this Psalm there is a double blessing promised to everyone who finds forgiveness for sins in the Lord. Note this is a blessing that only God can give. It cannot be earned or bought!
Psalm 112:1 NIV
Praise the LORD. Blessed are those who fear the LORD,
who find great delight in his commands.
As we come to know the Lord, we will grow in respect and worship. The fear of the Lord blossoms into delight in obeying His Word. Surely, we agree that there are many blessings that come to our lives when we choose to obey Him.
Psalm 119:1-2 NIV
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.
This is the longest Psalm which is an acrostic. The double blessing here is an echo of the blessings we saw earlier. We are blessed as we obey the Lord and His Word. This obedience will draw us closer to the Lord and give us true peace.
I hope this quick review was used by God to confirm your desire to love and obey the Lord. We are freely forgiven (Psalm 32) and given everything we need to live a blessed life by faith.
Be encouraged,
Pastor Rick
